Dr. Rakesh Shankar was a diplomat with the Indian Foreign Service. He represented India at the United Nations in New York, and in Egypt, Hungary, Zambia, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. He also served in several positions at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.
Dr. Shankar was also a professor of environmental science, a subject he taught at universities around the world. In the early 1990s, Dr. Shankar brought attention to problems of pollution and environmental degradation in New Delhi and elsewhere in India with four research publications: Toxic Chemicals in India, Acid Rain, Heavy Metal Pollution, and Volatile Organic Compounds and Urban Ambient Pollution.
One of India's foremost painters in oil and acrylic, Dr. Shankar was also a writer, a poet, and a speaker on spiritual issues. His publications include Shefalika: A Collection of Stories and Inexpressible: A Collection of Poems.
